I was born in 1954 and I fondly remember the area that I was brought up in ...the Meir! An awful name for any town but it seemed 'apt' in some ways back then because it was an area that lacked in so many ways - and perhaps it still does. Most of all I recall the 'Broadway Cinema' on the roundabout in Meir. It was a fantastic building from around the early 1950's or late 40's and as I kid for one and six that's where I saw many black and white films (and eventually colour) usually every Saturday. It was a beautiful building with a large semi circular staircase at the front. The seats were made out of some red velvet like material and when you stood up - so did they. We used to take great delight watching people who had attempted to sit on their seats without holding them down cos they would end up on the floor covered in popcorn or something similar. Some of the films showed there were simply awful but it was a thrill to watch anything really. At the end of the film they played the national anthem and people would rush to get out before they ended up standing up to show their respect for our queen. As a kid that never made sense to me but I always felt compelled to do it somehow - along with the old soldiers that did so every time with some pride. It was a time when children had a lot of respect for older people and war stories were everywhere. I used to think that if someone was old that they were probably a war hero at some time like John Wayne and the like. I loved the Carry on films and when a new one came out there was great excitement in school and we would all brag to our friends when we saw the latest one. Eventually as most people know they tore down The Broadway and it was (and still is cos since then the space has remained unused) it was an old building but it gave a bit of heart and character to the Meir something that's greatly lacking now. Progress eh? Thanks for reading this. Now YOU put a memory on here. before were all dead and forgotten! P.S. its easier to write it in Word and then copy and paste it into the window. Good luck and best wishes to all. Steve Edwards
